How do I check an engineer is really Gas Safe registered?

Anyone working on gas in your home has to be on the Gas Safe Register, by law. Checking takes a minute, and any engineer worth having will expect you to do it. We would rather you checked us than took our word for it.
The three checks

Ask for the card
Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card with their photo, a licence number and an expiry date. Asking is normal. Nobody legitimate is offended by it.

Check the number
Look the licence number up on the official register at gassaferegister.co.uk, or call 0800 408 5500. That tells you whether the card is current and who it belongs to.

Check the back of the card
This is the one people skip. The back lists the specific types of work the engineer is qualified for. Being registered for boilers does not automatically mean being registered for a gas cooker or a gas fire.
Warning signs
- No card, or a card they cannot show you today
- An expired date, or a name that does not match
- Cash only, no paperwork, and no certificate at the end
- A price that is far below everyone else, which usually means something is being left out
- Reluctance to notify Building Control on a new boiler, which is a legal requirement
What you should get at the end of a gas job
- A record of the work, with the engineer details on it
- Building Regulations notification for a new boiler installation
- Warranty registration for a new appliance
- A landlord gas safety record, if it is a let property
