A Victorian town inside the new town
Oakengates grew up around mines and ironworks, and it became a proper town in the mid 1800s when the market started and the railway arrived. A lot of the housing near the centre dates from that period or not long after: terraces with small kitchens, long thin gardens and heating that has been added to, bit by bit, over a hundred years.
Round the edges it is a different story. Priorslee is much newer, and the homes there are more likely to want servicing, controls and a boiler that keeps its warranty than a full rebuild of the system.
