Try these before you call anyone out
Some faults are not faults. Two minutes of checking can save you a call-out, and we would rather tell you that than charge you to press a button.
- Check the thermostat is calling for heat and the batteries are not flat, which is more common than people expect
- Check the timer or programmer, especially if the clocks have just changed
- Check the pressure gauge. Most boilers want somewhere around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold
- Check the condensate pipe, the white plastic one that runs outside. In a cold snap it can freeze and lock the boiler out
- Check nothing has tripped at the fuse board
If it is showing a fault code, write it down before you reset it. That code is the fastest route to the right part being on the van when we arrive.
The faults we see most
Losing pressure
The system is letting water out somewhere. Sometimes it is an obvious drip on a radiator valve, sometimes it is the pressure relief valve discharging outside, sometimes it is a pinhole under a floor. Topping it up weekly is not a fix, it is a symptom.
No hot water but the heating works
On a combi that usually points at the diverter valve or the plate heat exchanger. Both are common, both are repairable, and neither means you need a new boiler.
Locking out and needing a reset
Repeated lockouts are the boiler protecting itself. Ignition faults, a blocked condensate, a failing fan or a flow issue all show up this way. Resetting it over and over eventually stops working.
Kettling, banging or gurgling
Usually scale or sludge. The noise is the symptom, the cause is what the water in the system has been doing for years, and that is a flush and a filter rather than a new part.
Repair or replace, honestly
A repair is usually the right answer. It is cheaper, it is quicker, and a boiler that has been serviced has years left in it. We will tell you when it is not: when the part costs a serious fraction of a new boiler, when the same fault keeps coming back, when parts for that model are no longer made, or when the thing is old enough that you will be doing this again next winter.
What we will not do is use a breakdown as a sales opportunity. If it is worth fixing, we fix it.
