Cold rooms, cold radiators, and what they tell you

Where a radiator is cold says most of what an engineer needs to know before they arrive.

• Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: air in the radiator, and bleeding it usually fixes it
• Cold at the bottom, warm at the top: sludge sitting in the bottom of the radiator, which is a flush or a clean rather than a bleed
• One radiator cold, everything else fine: usually the valve, or a seized thermostatic head
• The radiators furthest from the boiler are the cold ones: the system needs balancing, or the pump is struggling
• Everything lukewarm: boiler, pump or a system full of debris

None of that needs a new boiler, and that matters, because replacing the boiler while the system underneath it is full of sludge just puts a new boiler on an old problem.

Powerflushing, and when it is honestly needed

A powerflush is worth doing when the water coming out of the system is black, when radiators are cold at the bottom, when the boiler is kettling, or before a new boiler goes on an older system. It is not a service, it is not an annual job, and it is not something you need every time a radiator is a bit cool.

After a flush, a magnetic filter is what keeps it clean. Without one, the same debris comes back.

Full system installs and upgrades

Sometimes the pipework is the problem: microbore that has silted up, a system that was extended twice by different people, a house that has had an extension added onto heating that was never sized for it.
