Should I repair or replace my boiler?

This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is that most boilers are worth repairing. A working boiler you have already paid for is cheaper than a new one, and a lot of the faults that feel terminal are one part.

Five questions that decide it

• What does the repair cost against a replacement? A rough rule people use is that if a single repair is getting close to a third of a new boiler, it is worth pricing both.
• Is this the first fault, or the third this year? A pattern matters more than any one bill.
• Are parts still made for it? Once a model is obsolete, the next fault has no fix at any price.
• Has it been serviced? A serviced boiler with one failed part is a repair. An unserviced boiler with a failed part often has more wrong behind it.
• How long are you staying in the house? A repair now and a replacement chosen calmly next summer is often the cheapest route overall.

Faults that are almost always worth repairing

• Diverter valve, the usual cause of heating but no hot water
• Plate heat exchanger, often the cause of lukewarm hot water
• Pump, fan, or a pressure sensor
• Thermostats and external controls, which are cheap and quick
• A blocked or frozen condensate pipe, which is not really a fault at all

Signals that point at replacement

• A cracked or leaking heat exchanger, the most expensive single part in there
• A leaking boiler body rather than a fitting
• Repeated lockouts that come back after each repair
• Parts no longer available for that model
• Heavy internal corrosion found during a service
