Which boiler brand should I pick?

Brand arguments are the most common thing people arrive with and the least useful thing to decide first. The major brands all make boilers that work. What separates them in practice is the warranty, the parts, and who near you can look after it.

What to actually compare

   Warranty length, and the conditions

   A long warranty is worth real money, but read what keeps it valid. It nearly always requires an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer, recorded. Some also require a system filter to be fitted at installation. Miss those and the long warranty is a short one.

   Parts availability

   The question that matters in year eight, not year one. Common brands mean common parts, which means a repair tomorrow rather than next week.

   Who can service it

   A boiler that any local engineer can work on is worth more to you than one where you are tied to a single approved installer.

   The right output, not the biggest

   Output should come from a calculation on your radiators and your hot water demand. An oversized boiler costs more, cycles more and heats your house no better.

What matters more than the brand

• Whether the system was flushed properly before the new boiler went on
• Whether a magnetic filter was fitted, and whether inhibitor went in
• Whether the gas supply is adequate for the boiler, which is checked by gas rating it
• Whether the condensate has a sensible run that will not freeze every winter
• Whether the controls are set up for how you actually live

Every one of those is down to the installer. That is why two identical boilers in two identical houses can have completely different lives.
